PP 197: 3 Types of Value to Get People to Care About Your Work (Community Building Series Pt. 2)

The Secret to Getting People to Care About Your Work

Does this struggle sound familiar?

You’re consistently sharing anything and everything, but people don’t seem to notice.

(Aside from the occasional like from your BFF, but that’s about it.)

This seems to be a theme I hear over and over again.

It’s hella easy to feel frustrated and defeated trying to get people to care about what you’re doing.

Trust me, I’ve been there, and it sucks butt when you strut into a ghost town after posting.

However, there’s one little secret I learned that radically shifted the way I approached creating and sharing on social media.

That’s what today’s episode and part 2 in this Community Building Series is all about: embracing and leveraging the 3 Buckets of Value technique to start getting people to care about what you’re doing.

Turn on the Marketing Switch

Stick with me! I know I’m challenging you to turn off your creativity switch and flip on your marketing switch…

Here's a secret to getting people to care about your work…

Are you ready?

A great way to get people to care about what you’re doing is to first show you care about them.

Simply reiterated, why should anyone give two shits about you when you don’t show that you give two shits about them?

GIVE someone a reason to care. This is huge if you want to create an engaged community of super fans.

Once you embrace and accept this, you can get back to the basics and create with intention and post with a purpose, as my student Marvin likes to say.

Yes, it’s important to know who your work is for and how to attract them (I’ll go deeper on this next week when we close out with part 3 of this series).

But, for now, let’s focus on the most important part of this formula: “Why should anyone care/what’s in it for them?”

In the noisy, oversaturated world of social media, it’s more important than ever to:

  • Be intentional about what you do.

  • Know what’s in it for the person engaging on the other end.

This will help you strike a nerve with one person over time, so you can build up your army of fans.

The 3 Buckets of Value

So how the hell do you show people you care in order to get them to care about you?

Let me break this down into a simple, actionable strategy for you.

I heard a rendition of this concept years ago. I can’t remember where I heard it, but I’ve since put my own spin to it.

I call this operating within the 3 Buckets of Value.

(I talk about this and more in the FREE Engaged Community Guide if you don't have it yet.)

Give someone a reason to care by creating work that is:

1. Inspirational

Share a message or story that inspires someone to take some form of action or makes them feel “some type of way.”

E.g., A vulnerable transformational story of how you turned a negative situation into a positive outcome. Include how you did to it to give your audience hope that they can do something similar.

This is probably my biggest bucket. I realize motivational-based things are what fuels me. So, naturally, I’m inclined to create the type of stuff that helps me push to the next level.

2. Educational

Teach someone something new or helpful.

E.g., This episode with tips on how to create more engaging work that people care about.

This is a bucket I’ve really put more focus into over the last few years as I’m learning what people struggle with the most. I teach what I know and break down how I built my side hustle and a community around it. This seems to be the sweet spot of what I’m passionate about, good at/experienced in, and there’s a need for it.

3. Entertaining

Provide an escape that can:

  • Be oddly satisfying

  • Be hilarious AF

  • Create suspense

  • Scare them

  • Pique someone’s curiosity

E.g., Think of all those viral videos on TikTok of pranks, dancing, or fails (who doesn’t like laughing at people who fall?).

Why do you watch specific movies, tv shows, YouTube, and/or channels?

Understand why you consume these things and connect it to what you can bring to the table that could provide that same effect.

BONUS: Here’s where true mastery comes into play in creating super fans over time.

I’m referring to those who can’t get enough of your content, share it with their following, and have alarms set to buy your latest release of whatever you’re selling.

The holy grail is when you can combine all 3 buckets into the work you’re creating.

For example, my goal with each podcast episode is to try and:

  • Potentially inspire you to take action in your creative pursuits.

  • While giving you tactful tips to see results…

  • In an emotional roller-coaster approach that can be both uplifting, serious, and comical.

This combo is the holy grail I’m chasing with my content.

At the same time, I don’t want to overwhelm you with the pressure of trying to hit a grand slam holy grail from the jump.

I'm just planting seeds here. So please, make shit easy on yourself and start slow.

Pick one bucket that naturally aligns with who you are at your core and go deep.

Study, Notice, Learn, Implement

Here’s a little on-going challenge for you moving forward.

Start studying and understanding what buckets people are thriving in and why it works for their specific audience!

Now pick a bucket for yourself and start applying this within your creative work.

One thing I want to drill home with you.

Before you share anything now, be intentional about what bucket it falls into and be able to answer the question, “Why should someone care about this?”

Good shit will happen over time. Trust me!
