People Pleasing Business: Stop Pleasing & Embrace Your Weird

Do you find yourself doing whatever you can to have people like you and everything you create? This is called being in the people pleasing business.I only ask because this used to be me. I could camouflage myself into any situation. I would say the things I thought you would want to hear so you would accept me. You could say I had great people skills as this tactic worked in high school through post-college.I’m sure it stemmed from growing up and getting picked on badly and not fitting in. The desire to be popular made me feel I needed to please everyone. It took me nearly 27 years to fully accept who I am now and how I can’t be liked by everyone. With this, I’ve also realized that it’s impossible for everyone to like my style of work and delivery. The old me would’ve done everything in my authority to change your mind but the new me accepts it.If you were like me and still find yourself tailoring your personality and work towards pleasing individuals then this is for you. Here are 3 benefits you experience when you stop being employed in the people pleasing business.

1. The Pressure is Off

It’s such a freeing feeling knowing that you don’t have to please everyone. It takes all the pressure off from performing every time you get in a group of people. As a creator, you and I have creative entitlement. You were born to create and you are all entitled to have our own vision and voice. I’m telling you right now you have permission to enjoy what you create and express yourself without concerning what someone thinks. The pressure is off so create what feels right to you—not for someone else.

2. You Can Be Yourself

As I mentioned earlier, embrace your weirdness.Maybe you’re quirky, awkward, goofy or just darn right too aggressive and sometimes intense like me—who cares! You should never alter your DNA to become someone else. Accept the way you were created as you were created to create in this fashion. You have something unique about you that the world can benefit from. Maybe you love to make cat drawings or you enjoy blogging in puns—that’s cool as hell and there is a perfect audience out there for you.You can truly please the right audience once you are comfortable with whom you are as a person.

3. The Right Audience Will Find You

You can’t please everyone….I’m going to say this again, you can’t please everyone.Got it?Trying to create work that appeals to everyone means that it will resonate with no one.Embrace your weirdness and think, speak and create from a place that is true to yourself. I promise you that your message will land on the right crowd. The main thing I’ve learned in my two years as Perspective-Collective is that your right message will find the right audience at the right moment. You can accomplish this by:

  • pouring your soul into your work and making it for you.

  • showing the world how much passion and excitement you have for your work.

  • not being afraid to get vulnerable.

People are attracted to those who stand for something and love the work they do. They are extremely rare qualities. They want to be associated with individuals like this and that individual is you.Chase the passion for your work, not the attention.

Going Out of the People Pleasing Business

I desperately want you to understand that the people pleasing business isn’t for you. You’ll never discover true happiness by camouflaging yourself into every situation. You and I must accept:

  • Who we are

  • How we act

  • What we make

There is only one of you and the only people pleasing business you should be in is the business of pleasing yourself. The right audience will follow accordingly.

Key Takeaways

  • You have permission to enjoy what you create.

  • Trying to create work that appeals to everyone means that it will resonate with no one.

  • Embrace your weirdness and think, speak and create from a place that is true to yourself.

  • Your right message will find the right audience at the right moment.

  • People are attracted to people who stand for something.

  • Never alter your DNA as you were created to create.

  • You can truly please the right audience once you are comfortable with whom you are as a person.
